You Should Start Texting Yourself in WhatsApp

It's about time you spoke to your WhatsApp.

The beauty of WhatsApp, along with other popular third-party chat apps, is that it lets you message anyone. It doesn't matter if you are communicating with friends, family or new acquaintances, or if these people have an iPhone or an Android. However, there's one person you haven't texted on WhatsApp that you probably should be: yourself.

But in WhatsApp, it's a completely new feature. In the past, the app didn't offer a direct way to send a text message to your number. However, one solution was to start a group chat and then remove all other members, leaving you to your own thoughts.

But why bother texting each other in the first place? This is no gimmick for those of us who have no one else to message. Instead, texting yourself can be a useful substitute for a notes app: You can jot down ideas, interesting links you come across, or any photos or videos you want to share. And since it's WhatsApp and not a random note app, you can use this space to store content you want to share with other WhatsApp users in the future.

It's also useful for sharing files between devices. Personally, I always use the feature in Slack to store notes and other work files I want to share in the future, so I bet frequent WhatsApp users could find similar benefits here.

How to text each other using WhatsApp

To exchange text messages using WhatsApp, you need to be running version 22.23.74 on iOS or version 2.22.23.77 on Android.

While the same contact list will appear, you should see your contact at the top.

Tap it, and a new chat with yourself will open, labeled "Message to yourself."

From here, write to yourself as you would anyone else, only the conversation will be one-sided. Like all other chats, these texts are end-to-end encrypted, so they're perfectly safe to use.
